Our new Instagrammable obsession

An annual flower show kicking off is all well and good, but ice cream will always get our attention – particularly when it looks as fetching as this. Yep, the yellow ones in the bunch above are also made of ice cream.

Amorino, an artisan gelato boutique (aka delicious ice-cream shop), creates pretty-as-a-picture roses about as far from a stingy scoop with freezer crystals as it's possible to get.

Now, to mark the opening of 2016's RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the gelato artists behind the cone-based creations have given us a step-by-step guide on how to make these impressive (and let's face it, eminently Instagrammable) ice-cream flowers at home.

First of all, choose your weapon. That is to say, flavour of ice cream. We suggest trying something appropriately floral, such as Helsett Farm's honey and lavender (£4.09, waitrose.com) or even making your own flavoured with rose water. Or, of course, just buying the prettiest colours you can find in the frozen aisle.

Next, you'll need a gelato spade or spatula – the experts suggest Lakeland's ice-cream spade (£5.25, lakeland.com).

The owner of Amorino, Hubert Attali, says: “The key to making your very own rose is the ice-cream spade, the tool which all of Amorino’s gelato artists use. This allows you to slice through ice cream ending up with a neat square, rather than a scoop, that can then be shaped into a petal.”

Step-by-step guide to making gelato flowers

“Start by filling the cone with ice cream to about an inch above the base, rounding it off into a ‘bud’ using a circular motion,” says Attali. “This forms the foundation for the structure of the rose.

“Next, take your spade and cut straight through the ice cream and swiftly pull it back towards you. This is the technique for creating the petals and gives them their soft rounded edge.

“Then, using the spade, mould the petals around the bud of the rose, rotating the cone in the opposite direction as you do so. From there you can add as many layers as you like in as many flavours!”

Pretty, but also a way of getting more than one flavour in a cone. Thumbs up from us.
